Diagnosing Tinnitus

Persistent ringing or buzzing that can only be heard by the sufferer is the tell-tale sign of tinnitus. Technically, tinnitus itself is actually a symptom of some underlying condition. To receive proper treatment, it's important to find what this underlying cause is, but sometimes that is easier said than done.

The first step in getting relief from tinnitus is usually to visit a doctor. They will begin by asking you a number of questions about your symptoms and your medical history. It's important to know when the symptoms began, if the ringing comes and goes or if it's constant, and if there are certain situations that make the ringing worse. Next, the doctor will check to see if there is an obvious physical reason for the tinnitus. They will check for excessive ear wax buildup since pressure from the buildup could be causing the tinnitus. They will also see if certain things, such as clenching your jaw, make the ringing worse. Sometimes your doctor will also want to do extra tests such as x-rays, MRI scans, balance tests, or blood tests. A hearing exam is usually done as well.

In your doctor is able to find a cause for the tinnitus, they will begin treatment. Some conditions that can be treated are blood vessel problems, stiff inner ear bones, and Meniere's syndrome. Problems such as earwax buildup and hypertension can also be treated. Unfortunately, for the majority of cases, no underlying cause for tinnitus can be found. Treatment will then need to be focused on managing the condition. There are ways to retrain your brain to tune out the tinnitus. Also there are several treatment options available that have been shown to help lessen tinnitus.

One of the newer (and more effective) solutions for tinnitus that has come to surface is called Goodbye Tinnitus. This program is completely accessed online. Also included are dozens of tinnitus maskers, ranging from specialized noise frequencies, nature sounds, and man made sounds.
